Sonos Releases Feature Update Highlighted by Support for Audible.com(R)
New Sonos Update Adds Support for Apple Lossless and Full-Screen Album Art
SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Sonos, Inc., the developer of wireless multi-room music systems for the digital home, today announced the immediate availability of a software feature update that gives Sonos customers access to more digital content and features to improve the Sonos multi-room music experience. Sonos software Version 1.3 includes support for Audible.com(R), the Internet's leading provider of spoken audio content, and Apple Computer's Lossless codec, plus, an array of enhancements such as full-screen album art and detailed track information.
For the first time, fans of the Audible.com service can listen to everything from books and language lessons, to the Wall Street Journal or New York Times, throughout their home and control it all from the palm of their hand. All Audible.com .AA (format 4*) file programs are accessible via the Sonos(TM) Controller and can be played in up to 32 rooms.
Apple Lossless, which provides bit for bit CD quality audio but uses half of the hard drive space as uncompressed music files, joins the list of audio formats supported by Sonos. In addition to Apple Lossless and Audible.com content, the Sonos(TM) Digital Music System supports WMA, AAC (MPEG4)**, MP3, WAV, FLAC (lossless), AIFF, Ogg Vorbis, MP3 and WMA Internet streaming and the Rhapsody(R) online music service version 3.1.
With every software update, Sonos also introduces a number of user-friendly features that allow the customer to get the most out of their Sonos experience. With Version 1.3 software, Sonos has developed features that will enhance the album art experience. On the Sonos Controller, pressing the OK button on the Now Playing screen will now showcase full-screen album art. When using the Sonos Desktop Controller, clicking on the album art in the Now Playing panel will allow the user to increase the size of the album art. Thumbnail displays of album art, plus additional track information, including title, artist, and album name for each song can be seen when scrolling through the Music Library or Sonos Queue.
"As the Sonos Digital Music System progresses, we continually look to our customers for the features that they would like us to add via our one-button software releases," said Andrew Schulert, vice president of product development, Sonos, Inc. "Sonos support for Audible and Apple Lossless content, as well as the other refinements we have developed, provide our users greater access to audio content while improving their day-to-day listening experience."
As Sonos expands distribution of the product worldwide, internationalization is a key initiative for Sonos in 2006. With the new software update, Sonos has added German language support. Now, when Sonos customers install the product in their homes, they will be given the option to have the system perform in the English or German language.
Other new features in Version 1.3 of Sonos software include the following:
* Fixed Line-out support for home theater integration is now supported
by Sonos. This feature benefits Sonos customers that connect a
Sonos(TM) ZonePlayer (ZP80 & ZP100) to a home theater system.
* Support for Hidden Zone Mode / Sonosnet Extension -- This feature
allows any ZonePlayer to be used to extend the range of the Sonos
wireless network. If used as an extender, the user is given the
option to hide the ZonePlayer on the Zones menu. This is a feature
that will be of particular interest to custom installers that serve
customers with legacy whole-home music systems.
* Wireless Security -- Sonosnet now uses128bit AES encryption.
* 'OK Button' Behavior -- The behavior of the OK button on the Sonos
Controller can be defined. Pop-up menu gives users the option to play
now, add to end of queue or play next in queue.
* Playlist and Queue Management -- Tracks can be moved in the Queue via
the Sonos Controller or Sonos Desktop Controller.
* Sonos Playlists Locator -- Playlists will detect when a file has
moved.
* Apple iTunes Folder Sharing on PC -- The Sonos Desktop Controller
setup for Windows now handles iTunes playlists if your music is stored
in a location outside of your 'My Music' folder.
