Falls Church City Council Grants Verizon Franchise to Offer FiOS TV to Nearly 11,000 Potential Viewers

Falls Church City Council Grants Verizon Franchise to Offer FiOS TV to Nearly 11,000 Potential Viewers

More than 1 Million Potential Viewers in Region Soon Will Have Choice of Cable TV Providers

FALLS CHURCH, Va., Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Falls Church City Council Monday night (Jan. 23) voted unanimously to grant Verizon a cable franchise, setting the stage for genuine cable competition for the city's 10,900 potential viewers. The council's action follows franchise approvals last year in Fairfax County, the city of Fairfax, the town of Herndon and the Marine Corps Base at Quantico, covering more than 1 million potential viewers. The company also has obtained franchises in California, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Texas. Verizon introduced its FiOS TV service -- with more than 330 digital channels, more than 20 high-definition channels and 1,800 video-on-demand titles -- to consumers in northern Virginia late last year. The following may be attributed to Robert W. Woltz Jr., president of Verizon Virginia.

"The Falls Church City Council's action will enable residents to choose their cable TV provider as easily as they now choose their phone provider. We commend Mayor Gardner, the city staff and the City Council for their efforts to give their constituents freedom of choice for their cable service.

"Competition translates to better service, better products and better value, and customers who have ordered our FiOS TV service in Herndon absolutely love the video quality and breadth of channels we offer. We look forward to bringing this outstanding alternative to cable to Falls Church customers in the near future."
