Almost One in Six Americans Report Discrimination at Workplace in Past Year
In the past year, 15 percent of American workers have experienced some form of discrimination in the workplace, according to a Gallup Poll conducted in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The poll was partially sponsored by Kaiser- Permanente, The Society for Human Resource Management, and United Parcel Service. The poll found that while the overall discrimination rate among Americans employed either full-time or part-time is 15 percent, the rate varies considerably by race and gender. Women are more than twice as likely to report that they have been discriminated against in the past year as are men. Among racial and ethnic groups, Asians and blacks are most likely to report experiences of discrimination while 18 percent of Hispanics and 12 percent of whites also report such incidents.

The uproar in Europe over the execution of double murderer Kenneth Lee Boyd in the United States last week came as no surprise to students of anti-American sentiment throughout the world. Boyd was the one-thousandth prisoner executed in America since capital punishment was reinstated in 1976. In a recent survey of European public perceptions of the United States, Consensus Research Group found that 53 percent of European publics hold less favorable impressions of the United States today than five years ago. While other survey sources have suggested that negative perceptions of President Bush, the U-S military effort in Iraq, and U-S support for Israel are the reasons for anti-American perceptions among European publics, Consensus data confirms that the observed erosion in America's standing among European publics extends beyond those headline issues.

Looking For More Holiday Stress? 'Stalking' for Parking Spots Is on the Rise
The latest Response Insurance National Driving Habits Survey shows a dramatic increase in the number of parking space "stalkers" poised to follow you to your car this holiday shopping season. The first Survey, conducted in 2000, had just 9 percent of drivers admitting to following shoppers back to their spaces to get their spot (A-K-A "stalking"). But this year the number jumped to more than 15 percent -- and for the first time men have caught up to women in this stress-provoking approach to snag the best spot in the lot. The four main parking space strategies identified by Response are "Search & Destroy" drivers who cruise the aisles for a space; "Lie & Wait" who position themselves at the end of an aisle waiting for an opening; the "See It & Take It" driver who simply takes the first space they see; and the "Stalker."
