King Kong captured by XYZ RGB

OTTAWA, Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Everyone is counting the minutes until the release of Peter Jackson's much-anticipated "King Kong", waiting to see some of the greatest Visual FX in film history. One company anxiously waiting is XYZ RGB Inc. (XYZ referring to 3D coordinates in space, RGB to the colours Red, Green, and Blue). XYZ RGB played a major role in bringing the dinosaurs of Skull Island, and Kong to life, using the most accurate laser scanning technology in the world. This technology, which was originally developed for museum and curatorial purposes, is now being used by XYZ RGB to laser scan objects for some of the world's biggest visual effects (VFX) houses, video game companies, and industrial manufacturers. The company gained notoriety in the 3D community after scanning the principle actors (Keannu Reeves, Lawrence Fishburne) for the Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions. Their laser was able to pick up every pore and wrinkle in the actor's faces, causing tremendous excitement in Hollywood, where up until that point 3D scanning companies produced models with no skin detail.

In 2003, XYZ RGB contacted Peter Jackson's Weta Digital during filming of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, and triggered Weta's interest in using high resolution scanning for the film's Academy Award winning VFX shots. XYZ RGB scanned the Mumakils, Shelob, and other creatures for the last film in the trilogy. Dinosaur maquettes soon followed for "Kong" in 2003 and 2004. The life like clay dinosaur maquettes were created by a group of talented sculptors at Weta Workshop in New Zealand, cast into fiberglass and then shipped in crates to Ottawa, with some of them measuring 7 ft in length and 5 ft tall. Most of the dinosaurs, and parts of Kong himself, were laser scanned at XYZ RGB, making it the largest scan job for one film in the company's history. In total, approximately 300 million measurements were taken for the Kong creatures over a 2-year period.

Founded in early 2001, XYZ RGB has been involved with laser scanning for a number of films such as Kong, Aeon Flux, Batman Begins, The Return of The King, The Matrix sequels, and has received an Academy Award nomination for Scientific and Technical Achievement. Their most recent work can be seen on an upcoming U2 video, and many of the next generation video games, including EA's Fight Night Round 3.
