"I can throw 'em straight. I can throw 'em at angles. I could box and I could bang. I'll bring a lot to the table and my arsenal will be on display," says an eager Barrett who's looking forward to showing the world once again what he's made of. Since returning to the ring in 2003 after an 18-month hiatus, Barrett has rebounded to the top of the ranks and is ready to claim the WBC Heavyweight championship title.
Barrett made his pro boxing debut as a headstrong and determined 25 year old in Yonkers, NY, knocking out his opponent in the first round. Twenty fights later, the undefeated Barrett claimed the World Boxing Council Continental Americas heavyweight title after defeating Phil Jackson and was catapulted into boxing stardom.
On July 15, 2004, Barrett fought Ukrainian giant Wladimir Klitschko and was knocked down a humiliating five times before suffering his first and only knockout. Undaunted by the fight, Barrett recommitted himself to fighting for honor. "I will fight anybody and I will win. You can never count me out. I am determined to become a world champion."
Though Barrett recovered well winning his next two fights, he faced tougher times after he decided to exit his promotional contract, which forced him to stay outside the ring for over a year and a half. Since his return in 2003 Barrett has won every fight he has competed in.
The Aug. 13, Showtime pay-per-view fight will be Barrett's first world title appearance after his two previous consecutive wins against Dominick Guinn in March 2004, and Owen, "What The Heck," Beck in February 2005.
The winner of the August 13th fight will be crowned World Boxing Council heavyweight champion. Boasting an impressive 31-3 record, Barrett is confident he'll be able to capture the championship title. "I will never underestimate anyone again," says Barrett more focused now than ever. Back on top, and prepared to stay there, this should truly prove to be the fight of a lifetime.
