Spam Increasing in Spite of Efforts to Contain It

Spam Increasing in Spite of Efforts to Contain It

Mail-Filters, the Global Leader in OEM Anti-Spam Solutions, Finds Spam as Percentage of Email Traffic on the Rise Worldwide

SAN MATEO, Calif., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Mail-Filters.com, Inc. provides technology that filters billions of messages a day in more than 100 countries and 30 languages for its OEM partners. Analysis of email traffic shows that spam as a percentage of total email messages rose from 87% in January 2004 to 93% in January 2005. In addition, Mail-Filters saw a noticeable increase each quarter throughout 2004. This continuous increase indicates that spam will continue to grow in 2005 in spite of attempts to legislate it away with the passage of the Can Spam Act in December 2003.

Daniel Ashby, Senior Vice President at Mail-Filters, explained, "The rise in spam can be attributed to a number of factors including:

1) A noticeable increase in phishing attacks in recent months,
2) Spammers that have become more sophisticated in their techniques to
overcome Bayesian and heuristic technologies,
3) The financial success of spamming that attracts more spammers and
their spam, and
4) Can Spam legislation that has, ironically, legitimized spam by
providing spammers with a set of rules for engagement."

"The percentage of spam in email traffic processed using Mail-Filters technology is higher than most other published estimates," said Mr. Ashby. "There is one major reason for this: Mail-Filters catches more spam, with fewer false-positives, than virtually all other spam filters. As a result, we have a clearer view of what is really happening in the industry."

Mr. Ashby concluded by stating, "we really don't see any indication that spam attacks will decrease in the near future. In fact, we see evidence that not only is spam on the rise but the threat to computers and personal information from that spam is increasing as well."
