A Rural Renaissance: The Progressive Farmer Magazine Names the Best Places to Live in Rural America

The country is experiencing a "rural renaissance." Recognizing this trend, The Progressive Farmer magazine names the best places to live in rural America in its February issue. The experts at the farm and country living publication have identified the most desirable rural communities based on quality schools, low crime, good health care, and a clean environment, and intangible qualities such as community. The Progressive Farmer singled out the top 10 areas, as well as the best areas by region: Northeast, South, Midwest, Southwest, and West. The first-annual list is the first of its kind to name areas by county instead of city.

The top 10 counties for 2005 are:

1. Fauquier County, Virginia
2. Oconee County, Georgia
3. McPherson County, Kansas
4. Callaway County, Missouri
5. Grafton County, New Hampshire
6. Gillespie County, Texas
7. Sauk County, Wisconsin
8. Wilson County, Tennessee
9. Eagle County, Colorado
10. Rankin County, Mississippi

Specifically, The Harris Poll found that among all adults, nine percent blame the owners and ten percent blame the players for the lockout. Half blame both equally and one-third say they are not sure.

Poll Reveals Most Americans Doubt Tsunami-like Disaster Possible in U.S. Despite Government Warnings, National Media Coverage

More than half the country does not believe that a tsunami-like disaster could happen on U.S. soil in the next few years. That's according to results of a recent poll released yesterday on the occasion of World Wetlands Day.

Despite government warnings, national news coverage from leading media sources, and a close call less than six months ago that forced the evacuation of more than a million Louisiana residents, a poll conducted by Washington, D- C-based Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates found that 53 percent of Americans do not believe that a catastrophic disaster like the Southeast Asian Tsunami could hit the United States in the next few years.
