Howard K. Smith's Personal Library Offered at Waverly Auctions

FALLS CHURCH, Va., Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Waverly Auctions, a subsidiary of Quinn's Auction Galleries, will offer the personal library of veteran newsman Howard K. Smith and his wife Benedicte, on Thursday, March 3rd, 2005, 6:30 P.M. The Smith Library includes autographed and personally inscribed books by Presidents Johnson, Kennedy, and Nixon, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Lincoln biographer Carl Sandburg. Also included are collections of history, literature, and the classics, many in fine bindings by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, Bumpus, and Morrell.

Howard Kingsbury Smith (1914-2002) was born in Ferriday, Louisiana. A Rhodes Scholar, he graduated from Oxford University in 1939 and joined United Press in London. He was assigned to Berlin and subsequently joined CBS, launching a highly distinguished career that made him a household name in television news.

One of "Murrow's Boys," Smith covered Berlin as a war correspondent with CBS Radio, interviewing Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler, among others. He witnessed the German surrender to the Russians in 1945 and covered the Nuremburg Trials in 1946. He served as CBS News European Correspondent, Washington Correspondent, and ultimately as Chief Correspondent and General Manager of CBS News, Washington, before going on to host The Great Challenge and Face The Nation.

Smith made history when he moderated the first televised presidential debate between Senator John F. Kennedy and Vice President Richard M. Nixon on September 26th, 1960. He later resigned from CBS over his position on civil rights, delivered in a commentary on CBS Special Reports, "Who Speaks for Birmingham?"

After CBS, Smith joined ABC and continued covering global events, including the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missle Crisis. At ABC in Washington, he was both reporter and anchor, hosting Howard K. Smith - News & Comment, ABC Scope, ABC Evening News, and ABC News Closeup.

The Howard K. Smith library includes copies of John F. Kennedy's "The Strategy of Peace" and Richard Nixon's "The Challenges We Face," both inscribed to Smith, each illustrated with a black and white photograph of the debate he so professionally moderated, and housed in splendid uniform morocco bindings by Sangorski & Sutcliffe.
