Desso DLW Sports Systems Supplies Grass Pitch for Real Madrid's Bernabeu Stadium

DENDERMONDE, Belgium, February 2/PRNewswire/ -- Recently, sports fans may have noticed the poor condition of
Madrid's grass pitch. After consulting experts at Desso, Real decided to
renew the pitch in the Bernabeu Stadium. Once again, Real opted for the
natural grass system reinforced with artificial grass fibres, the DD
GrassMaster system, that has proved so successful in the past.



Over the last few days the grass layer has been removed and
rolls of new turf have been laid. The artificial fibres remained embedded in
the substructure ensuring that the new grass roots will entwine around them
quickly.



Desso finished this challenging job in a record time of 3,5
days. Real will play its match against Espanyol on 5 February on the newly
installed pitch. Sacchi, Director of Football, and Luxemburgo, trainer of
Real Madrid, inspected the new pitch and complimented Desso on pulling off
this difficult feat.



During close season the second part of the DD GrassMaster
system will be installed.



Extra artificial grass fibres will be injected into the pitch
using computer-controlled machines. As the replacement had to take place
during playing season and in the middle of winter, this method of
installation is the best solution.



The cause of the pitch problems has been put down to extreme
weather conditions that are very rare for Madrid (weeks of heavy rain,
followed by frost). This, combined with an heating system ill-equipped to
handle such extremes, made it impossible for the maintenance team to fix the
problem in time. This proved fatal for the natural grass, although the
artificial grass fibres were unaffected.



So that Real get the quality pitch they expect from the DD
GrassMaster system, an expert from Desso will monitor the grass pitch during
the season.
