Current Science Group Selects Postini for Email Security

Current Science Group Selects Postini for Email Security

Postini Replaces UK Managed Service Provider

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Postini, the leading provider of email security and management for the enterprise, today announced that the Current Science Group has deployed Postini Perimeter Manager(TM) to block spam, viruses and other threats directed at its corporate network. Postini replaces a UK managed service provider which had been providing the Current Science Group with spam and virus filtering.

According to Tim Hyde-Smith, Head of IT for the Current Science Group, the company switched managed service providers due to their growing dissatisfaction with the quality of service and customer support they were receiving. "We were getting more and more frustrated with the number of emails that were being delayed," said Hyde-Smith. "Compounding the problem was that it could take up to 24 hours for the company's customer support people to get back to us to try to solve our problems." Hyde-Smith said that when they switched to Postini they found that Postini's customer support organization was very responsive, and on one occasion was able to get back to him in 15 minutes even though he placed the call at 2:00 a.m. California time.

Another key reason for the switch to Postini, said Hyde Smith, was that Postini gives them the ability to make changes in the configuration of the service and immediately monitor what is happening through the real time admin console. "This has helped us identify a number of issues with our Internet connection and DNS servers. It is a major plus over our previous managed service solution."

Hyde-Smith also said that unlike Postini, his original managed service provider was unable to stop directory harvest attacks (DHAs), as they weren't able to identify email addresses, just domain records. DHAs, often called "the silent killer" due to their ability to cripple a mail server, are a method used by spammers to steal a company's email addresses through virtually undetectable attacks on email systems. Since implementing Postini, the Current Science Group now handles 100,000 fewer messages per day.

According to Rick Schultz, vice president of worldwide sales for Postini, DHAs are becoming alarmingly widespread, and are the most misunderstood threat companies face. A recent Postini report reveals that the average company is the target of 150 DHAs per day, each consisting of approximately 250 invalid email delivery attempts. The typical company is victimized by almost 40,000 invalid delivery attempts per day. Schultz said, "Postini, with its sender-IP behavior analysis method, is one of the few companies with the capability to identify and stop DHAs." As the Current Science group found out, "any company without the ability to stop these attacks is leaving their email servers vulnerable and could lead to a shut down of its email system," he added.
