RCN Launches RCN WebWatch, a New Remote Video Monitoring Service; First Telecommunications Provider to Introduce Remote Home Monitoring Solution
PRINCETON, N.J., Jan. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- RCN Corporation (Pink Sheets: RCNI) announced today the launch of RCN WebWatch, a first-of- its-kind home monitoring system that allows customers to remotely view real- time video of their home or business through any PC, which is connected to a high-speed Internet connection. This offering is another example of the quality products RCN can deliver over its Megaband(R) network. The service will be available in RCN's Boston market immediately, with other markets to follow.
"RCN is using its fiber-rich network to bring peace of mind to its customers with remote monitoring based on innovation and our high bandwidth infrastructure," said Pete Aquino, CEO of RCN Corporation. "This service allows homeowners, business owners, mothers and fathers the ability to watch their homes or businesses while they are not there. This product showcases our commitment to providing our customers with the most compelling, most innovative broadband services available on the market."
Using RCN's high-power WebWatch system is simple and convenient. Customers place up to four small wireless cameras throughout their homes or businesses. When away from the home or business, they log in to a secure website through the Internet to view real-time, streaming videos. Customers can view one camera at a time or all four simultaneously. The video can also be recorded for later viewing.
RCN WebWatch is installed by trained RCN technicians and includes easy-to- use features that offer endless possibilities for the consumer. Its wireless cameras feature specially-designed motion detectors that, when activated, record automatically and notify customers via email, cell phone or other wireless device, that motion has been detected in their home or business. The system fits any lifestyle and use by allowing users to set individual schedules for recording and notification.
RCN WebWatch also has a unique invite feature that allows multiple users to view real-time, streaming videos simultaneously from different locations. Users can invite family or colleagues via email to view real-time video at pre-specified times. These features allow friends and relatives far away to watch a first step or to join in celebrating a child's birthday.
RCN provides the fastest Internet speeds available to residential customers, allowing WebWatch users to view up to four real-time streaming videos with remarkable clarity. RCN WebWatch leverages software developed by Casero Inc. and is based on RCN's Wi-Fi 802.11g wireless broadband home networking package, which provides customers with a full range of additional wireless computing options.
"This is the perfect technology for individuals who need to keep an eye on their residences or businesses. They can make sure their pet is OK, investigate why a burglar alarm has gone off or confirm that a child got home from school on time," said Elad Nafshi, Director of Internet and Phone Product Management. "It's ideal for parents, adults looking after their elderly parents, pet owners, small business owners and vacation property owners."
RCN WebWatch is available to RCN Internet subscribers for an additional $9.95 per month. Included in the monthly service fee is one wireless web camera and 24-hour technical support. Additional wireless cameras may be purchased through local retailers. For more information visit http://www.rcn.com/webwatch.
