Air Transport World to Honor Garmin's Innovation in ADS-B Technology

Air Transport World to Honor Garmin's Innovation in ADS-B Technology

OLATHE, Kan., Jan. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ:GRMN), today learned the company will be honored for its pioneering work on Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) avionics for the Air Transport and General Aviation market segments. Garmin's most recent ADS-B product is the GDL 90(TM), the first Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) certified to support a wide array of ADS-B broadband services. Air Transport World Magazine will honor Garmin with the Airline Technology Achievement Award for "championing the development of ADS-B, the chief enabling technology for the future of air-traffic management." Garmin and other airline award winners will be honored at the magazine's Feb. 22 gala event in Washington, D.C.

"This award validates the countless hours that went into developing and certifying the GDL 90 and other ADS-B applications at our Garmin AT facility in Salem (Ore.), and it provides a glimpse at the future of aviation safety," said Gary Kelley, Garmin's director of marketing. "We believe the ADS-B technology is a critical step toward realizing the FAA's vision of Free Flight, which should improve the safe flow of commercial and non-commercial aircraft within the U.S. air-traffic system."

The GDL 90 is the first TSO C154-certified UAT. Designed as a remote-mounted unit, the GDL 90 receives ground-based data and transfers that data in the form of real-time weather, traffic and TFRs to the Garmin MX 20(TM) multi-function display. The transceiver includes a TSO C145a WAAS GPS sensor that offers outstanding position accuracy and integrity. Additional ADS-B benefits that are expected to be developed over time include improvements in separation standards, airport surface navigation, tracking vehicle movements on the airport surface, and asset tracking for fleet operators.

As the FAA rolls out ADS-B technology nationwide, the ground stations are expected to track aircraft movement and provide radar-like traffic separation services. Additionally, these ground stations are expected to broadcast graphical and textual weather information via the FAA's Flight Information Service (FIS-B), traffic targets being tracked by ATC via the FAA's Traffic Information Service (TIS-B), and graphical TFR information. The federal government currently plans to offer all of these services free of charge to General Aviation and commercial operators.

The GDL 90 is currently available at an MSRP of $7,995. It includes top- and bottom-mount datalink antennae, a WAAS GPS antenna and an installation kit.
