Passengers ride in a specially designed 12-passenger, 4WD open-air Mercedes Benz Unimog, driven by a guide. The tour's route includes areas of Catalina Island where no other tour can venture. It features a scenic drive along the ridge line overlooking coves west of Avalon, and a guided tour of the American Bald Eagle Habitat at Middle Ranch, where passengers will learn about the island's restoration projects and conservation efforts.
"Before the Cape Canyon Tour, the only way visitors could venture to these rugged parts of the island was on foot," says Joe Caliva, Vice President of Sightseeing for Discovery Tours, part of the Santa Catalina Island Company. "The Cape Canyon Tour is designed as an intimate tour in a one-of-a-kind vehicle, giving each passenger the opportunity to ask questions, all while having fun and getting an up-close look at the island's beautiful interior."
The tour continues up Cape Canyon for a unique and stunning view of Catalina's outback. Then, it's on to a delicious lunch at the Airport-in-the- Sky. After lunch, passengers will have time to visit the Catalina Nature Center, with its educational displays and native plant garden.
On the drive back to town, there will be several photo stops so passengers can enjoy the beautiful vistas of the ocean and the town of Avalon.
The Cape Canyon Tour lasts approximately four hours and departs from Avalon at 9am. The price is $89 per person, which includes lunch. Each trip is limited to twelve passengers for a truly personalized tour.
