Glencoe Home Listed in the National Register of Historic Places
CHICAGO, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Magnolia Restorations LLC (http://www.magnoliarestoration.com/), announced that the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, has listed Magnolia's showcase home, the John Rogerson Montgomery House on the National Register of Historic Places. The Georgian Revival residence was designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw in 1908, and reflects the English and American Arts & Crafts movements of the early twentieth century. The John Rogerson Montgomery House is the first structure in the Village of Glencoe to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
"The John Rogerson Montgomery House is locally significant as an excellent example of the blending of Georgian revival architecture with influences from the Arts & Crafts movement, as interpreted by Shaw, one of the Midwest's foremost architects of country houses," commented Susan Benjamin, architectural historian of Benjamin Historic Certifications, LLC and co-author of North Shore Chicago: Houses of the Lakefront Suburbs 1890-1940. "To restore a structure to this level of distinction requires a unique combination of insight, forensic investigative skills and construction management discipline." Magnolia's revival emphasizes the importance of design elements, detail, materials and craftsmanship during this current resurgence in restoration.
Shaw's Glencoe country houses form an important part of his prolific career, which includes designing many homes on Chicago's North Shore. Architectural historian, Mark Allen Hewitt described Shaw in his book, The Architect and the American Country House, as "Chicago's leading eclectic domestic architect at the turn of the century," developing work that reflected the historicism that permeated architecture during the first three decades of the Twentieth Century. Located in the historic Hubbard Woods section of Glencoe, the John Rogerson Montgomery House was prominently sited to take best advantage of the topography and curving roadways following the area's ravine- cut setting.
"We are very pleased by the designation," stated Margaret Johnsson, owner and founder of Magnolia Restorations LLC. "Now a National and Glencoe Landmark, in addition to raising awareness of this notable architect, the award-winning restoration project has also significantly increased the value of the property." Magnolia Restorations was first recognized in May of this year for its preservation of the John Rogerson Montgomery House when the firm, its team of architects and general contractor received an award in the Restoration category from the Historic Preservation Commission of the Village of Glencoe.
The National Register of Historic Places is the nation's official list of places recognized for their historical, architectural or archeological significance and considered worthy of preservation. The National Register is maintained by the U.S. Department of the Interior, and nominations of Illinois properties to the Register are processed through the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.
