NEWS: Research shows pizza doesn't have to send your diet to the end zone

STORY SUMMARY:

Virtually everyone in America who tunes into the Super Bowl does so while eating pizza. It's the most popular pizza-eating day of the year with sales of frozen pizza up $15 million the week before the Big Game. Knowing this, the editors at Health Magazine conducted a taste test to determine if health-conscious football fans can enjoy pizza without throwing their diet into the end zone. Their taste buds found frozen pizza doesn't have to taste like cardboard -- and it can be good for you!

Judged on nutrition and taste, Amy's cheese, Boca Rising Crust, and American Flatbread brands all received B's in the test. California Pizza Kitchen got an A-. And the top pick -- at 140 calories and six fat grams per slice -- is Freschetta Rising Crust Four-Cheese pizza.

Experts say pizza can be a balanced, nutritional meal. It contains many important vitamins and minerals like lycopene, folic acid, and vitamins B and A. They say the key is to be careful when choosing which pizza to eat. If you're watching your diet, select spinach over pepperoni, avoid double crust and double toppings and have one slice instead of four. Choose wisely and you really can have your pie and eat it too!
