'Football Shrink': Eagles Are Better Than Patriots; Performance Index of Sport Psychologist Forecasts a Super Bowl Upset Based on MPI Statistics!
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Jan. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Ignore convention and pick the Eagles! The Eagles should defeat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX. So predicts the creator of the Mental Performance Index(TM) (MPI(TM)), Dr. John F. Murray, who works with NFL players and has used the index throughout the last three NFL seasons to quantify the degree to which a team performs to perfection.
The complimentary Super Bowl numerology by "The Football Shrink," is posted on his website: http://www.footballperformance.com/ . Philadelphia (.541) scored better than New England (.525) in the playoffs, and held their opponents to a much lower MPI score (.437) than New England (.504). The Eagles were superb on defense, where they posted a .548 to .527 advantage over New England. However, the Patriots scored higher in pure pressure situations and will have to continue doing this to have a chance on Super Bowl Sunday.
The 43-year-old Ph.D. licensed sport/performance psychologist assigns points on each play for "focused execution" and "pressure management." Game totals range from .000 to 1.000 (perfection).
"Scoring at .600 is excellent," said Murray. "But to a sport psychologist, no team ever reaches perfection."
As Jets coach Herman Edwards said, "On every play somebody screws up."
The MPI accurately forecast the blowout upset win by Tampa Bay over Oakland two years ago (in Arizona Republic), and forecast an "extremely close game" last year. The game was tied with 4 seconds remaining.
The MPI has been covered by ESPN The Magazine, and Murray has appeared on national radio and television many times to discuss the MPI and sport psychology. This year, Dr. Murray appears on ESPN Radio's affiliates in Dallas, TX and Blacksburg, VA, Ron Jacober's award winning "Sports on Sunday Morning" on KMOX in St. Louis, Mo., and Bloomberg Radio's "Bloomberg on the Ball" with Bob Goldsholl (third straight year).
Murray provides lectures, mental coaching, and sport psychology services to athletes and teams in many sports. He authored "Smart Tennis," and Vincent Spadea credited him for helping him overcome the longest losing streak in tennis history.
