C.A.C. Media and VWB Announce Commercial Success of Linux Media Center
New Features and Advanced PVR Services Maintain C.A.C. Media's Leadership Position
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- C.A.C. Media, a leading provider of Linux digital entertainment technology and services announced commercial success of MCSS (Media Convergence Software Suite), the Company's Linux Media OS, targeted to drive the next generation of digital entertainment devices. Video Without Boundaries, Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: VDWB, VDWBE) , conducted a very successful holiday test of its MCSS-powered MediaREADY 4000 media center with major U.S. retailers. "Based on stellar sell-thrus in the first 2 weeks of a 6 week test, larger shipments are anticipated," said Jeffery Harrell, President and CEO, VWB Inc.
Hits Consumers' Hot Spots
Two years in development, the platform seeks to use its media-only pedigree to deliver an industry leading feature set that combines the smarts and horsepower of a PC, convenient "lean back" user screens and remote control interfaces, and support for video outputs ranging from traditional TV composite to HDTV resolutions. "We believe our Linux Media OS is the right choice for digital entertainment device manufacturers because it has a small footprint, possesses greater flexibility due to its open source architecture, lowers manufacturers' BOM, and has the widest and deepest feature set in the industry," said Ken Nelson, C.A.C. Media's CEO.
Multifunction Capabilities and New Features Will Propel Momentum
The myriad of new devices available to consumers include PC / Media Centers, Digital Media Adapters, DVD Players & Recorders, PVR/DVR Devices and Portable Video Jukeboxes. C.A.C. Media is able to license solutions to manufacturers that enable them to build complete media center products encompassing many "connected digital media features" into TVs, stand-alone entertainment units, or portable units.
New Features added to MCSS in Q4 2004 are:
Helix(TM) powered Media Player:
C.A.C. Media released its new version of its Helix-powered streaming media player that supports TV resolutions from 320 X 480 up to 1080i. With the Helix-powered media player, consumers now can enjoy live streaming media from 1000s of Internet audio and video sources when using MCSS. New functionality added to the Helix-powered media player includes: new TV-centric skin and navigation for TV viewing; auto buffer and congestion display; enhanced caching and streaming optimization; IR remote control; compatibility with standard CE remote controls and wireless keyboards; and one-touch full screen 720 x 480 wide screen support.
"C.A.C. Media's MCSS is the latest Linux-based living room device to adopt the multi-format Helix media platform to enable consumers to enjoy the widest possible content experiences on devices containing C.A.C. Media's MCSS," said Kevin Forman, GM Helix, RealNetworks, Inc.
"Firefox on TV" Browser
In conjunction with Firefox open source efforts, C.A.C. Media has released a made-for-TV Firefox distribution compatible with all MCSS devices. Improvements with new browser include: faster browsing and local caching; pop- up ad stopper; IR Remote Control Compatibility with standard CE remote controls and wireless keyboards; Internet on TV autoscaling; and Helix-powered media player.
Personal Video Recording w/EPG
C.A.C.'s PVR with Integrated EPG supports all trick-play modes; record by channel & time, program title, individual episode or entire series; and manual channel time record. Other features include: Dual Tuner support; IR Blaster integration for digital STB compatibility; 30 day EPG Data access; advanced TV sorting by actor, genre and title; and HD to DVD archiving of recorded TV shows. The PVR feature offers C.A.C.'s manufacturing partner a clear strategic advantage over PVR-only devices. This PVR feature, which comes with an EPG, can be offered to consumers for free, because the device will push a huge assortment of on-demand content, which provides them with costless revenue to subsidize the EPG subscription. "C.A.C. Media offers EPG Guide subscription services to all manufacturers at cost; hence, manufacturers can bundle 'lifetime EPG guide service' into the product's retail price at an average increase of only 5% on the average retail price," said Ken Nelson, CEO C.A.C. Media.
MCSS supports various reference designs and existing products available for OEM by CE & PC manufacturers. For more information on MCSS features, compatibility, and OEM products available, visit http://www.cacmedia.tv/ .
