Partnership Allows Consumers Access to Live TV, Music, Videos, Photos on Boingo's Worldwide Network of Wi-Fi Hot Spot Locations
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Orb Networks, Inc., a leading developer of streaming media software and services, and Boingo Wireless, Inc., a wireless Internet service provider for business travelers, today announced the companies have joined forces to offer wireless delivery of live television, music, videos, photos and other digital home content.
The cooperation between the two companies highlights the growing number of applications available for Wi-Fi users. The Orb service provides a simple way for consumers to view, hear and control digital content from virtually any Internet-enabled device. Now, Orb customers can have access to this service wirelessly via the 12,000 hot-spot Boingo(R) Roaming System.
The companies' marketing agreement will cover interoperability of their two services and joint marketing and promotion activities that will kick off with a joint demonstration at the 2005 International CES tradeshow this week.
In addition, the companies will cross promote their services. Orb customers who sign up for Boingo service will get their first 30 days of Boingo free. Boingo customers who sign up for Orb service will get the first 60 days of Orb for free. Orb Delivers Remote Media Access
Orb's solution is the first of its kind to allow consumers spontaneous mobile access to their music, live television, videos, photos and other digital content from any device that can connect to the Internet, such as a cell phone, PDA, or notebook computer. By partnering with Boingo, users can gain access to Orb's media service in the thousands of airports, hotels, convention centers, cafes and other public locations in Boingo's worldwide Wi-Fi network.
"As wireless networks become more ubiquitous, applications like Orb give users new ways to stay connected, in this case to share their personal media or to be entertained," said Dave Hagan, president and CEO of Boingo Wireless. "Combining Boingo's high-speed Wi-Fi access with Orb's service gives users much more flexibility to access their personal media when it's convenient for them -- without the need to carry multiple devices for the job."
"Eventually, every cafe, bookstore, airport, hotel and train will have Wi-Fi access," said James Behrens, CEO, Orb Networks. "These two companies are at the forefront of that revolution and are enabling consumers to easily connect with their most coveted digital entertainment. If our customers need to be away from home, there's no reason they have to be restricted from accessing their music library or television."
In a separate press release issued on January 4, Orb Networks introduced Orb Media 1.0 at the 2005 International CES tradeshow in Las Vegas, Nevada. Orb's first product introduction marks a breakthrough in streaming digital media services. Using any Web browser, Orb provides a simple, intuitive interface to the user's content located on their home PC or on the Internet allowing users to create their own "personal media portal." Users can now see their home videos, listen to their favorite songs, or watch live TV on virtually any of their Internet-connected devices. By removing the complexity and limitations of many of today's digital entertainment products and services, Orb's software architecture leverages the best features of today's popular standards while abiding by current digital rights management solutions.
