Audiovox Navigation Now Features Real-Time Traffic
HAUPPAUGE, N.Y., and LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- As a result of a partnership with Siemens VDO Automotive, Tele Atlas and Clear Channel Communications, Audiovox Corporation (NASDAQ:VOXX) has announced the incorporation of Real-Time Traffic Messaging into their vehicle navigation models.
The system works on an FM side band radio signal which utilizes RDS (Radio Data Service) technology. Digitized and coded Real Time Traffic data is then fed to Traffic Message Channel-enabled Audiovox Navigation Systems, and the driver is notified instantly about traffic situations on his route.
Tom Malone, Senior VP Sales of Audiovox Electronics Corporation outlined the new systems capabilities that are designed to give drivers a picture of traffic conditions on their Audiovox navigation units in real time, that is, as it is happening. "Radio traffic broadcasts can lag as much as a half-hour behind the actual condition, thus rendering them practically useless at times. Real-Time Traffic is as close to being a driver's in-car traffic alert advisor as Real-Time Traffic updates appear on the company's navigation system screen with complete map displays. The system is designed to offer a repeat function should the driver need it. Because the data arrives earlier than it would on conventional traffic-news stations, the driver can decide ahead of time whether he should detour or stay on his course.
Traffic 'incidents' such as accident, construction, police action, etc., are displayed in a pop-up window on the navigation screen. Click the specific icon for instant information. Move the cursor from icon to icon. The icons are color-coded: gray indicates general road information; red for a traffic situation on the current route.
The Audiovox Real-Time Traffic System is currently available for Navigation Models NPC5400 and NPD5500, which include a Real-Time receiver (NAVTMC) and map release software. There is no charge for activation of the Real Time Traffic system and the first three months of service use are free. Consumers can purchase subsequent service contracts in one and two year increments; one year activation is priced at $59.90 ($4.99 per month), two years costs $95.90 ($4.00 per month). Both activation and renewal can be done via an 800 number or through the Internet.
Future navigation products are slated to include integrated Real-Time receivers, auto-tuning into available stations, high-end tuner technology (digital tuner, Sensitivity 3 dB/uV) and station identification in the unit's status line.
