Webroot to Offer Anti-Spyware Solution Directly to MSN Dial-Up Customers at No Charge
Subscribers Will Receive Award-Winning Webroot Spy Sweeper Program for No Additional Cost
BOULDER, Colo., Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Webroot Software, Inc., a producer of award-winning privacy, protection and performance software, today announced a deal with MSN Dial-up to offer Spy Sweeper, Webroot's award-winning consumer anti-spyware software, directly to MSN Dial-Up customers through the MSN Member Center (membercenter.msn.com). Webroot(R) Spy Sweeper(TM) for MSN Dial-Up will be provided at no charge to MSN Dial-Up subscribers for the length of their subscription.
Industry reports have found spyware and adware together infect at least 90 percent of all Internet-connected PCs. Spyware programs may secretly monitor users' online activities and communicate them to third parties, and may make surreptitious changes to a user's PC. At its worst, the presence of the more aggressive forms of spyware (key loggers and systems monitors) may lead to identity theft.
"The dangers posed to consumers by spyware and adware cannot be underestimated," said David Moll, CEO of Webroot. "MSN understands that deceptive software such as spyware is a major concern for online consumers. By offering its subscribers Spy Sweeper along with detailed educational information and advice on spyware and adware, MSN is showing its commitment to helping provide a more secure online environment. "
A two-time recipient of PC Magazine's Editors' Choice Award, Webroot Spy Sweeper has an installed base of more than five million users. Spy Sweeper for MSN Dial-Up will scan a subscriber's entire system using a frequently updated database of thousands of potentially undesirable threats. In addition to the loss of personal information, spyware and other unwanted programs can also cause a slower Internet connection, pop-up advertisement problems and reduced computer performance.
"We know that online safety is a top concern for consumers, and MSN is focused on continuing to provide a safer and more robust communications experience for our customers," said John Nicol, general manager of MSN Internet Access services at Microsoft Corp. "Spyware continues to be an industry issue, and as such it is a concern to our customers. We're pleased to offer the Spy Sweeper anti-spyware solution free to help MSN Dial-Up customers enjoy a more secure online experience."
