Postini Unveils World's Largest Encrypted Email Network; Builds TLS Encryption Support Into Managed Service Offering
Support for Popular TLS Standard Is Important Step in Company's Vision for Global Trusted Email Network
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Postini, the leading provider of email security and management for the enterprise, today announced Postini Auto-Encryption, a new feature of its leading secure email boundary service, Perimeter Manager Enterprise Edition 5.2. Postini's implementation of Transport Layer Security (TLS), the popular encryption standard, immediately creates the largest encrypted email network in the world and represents an important step in the company's vision for a global trusted email network.
By supporting the TLS standard, Postini will allow more than 4,000 customers worldwide to secure sensitive email at no additional cost. Customers who choose to implement TLS, a standard feature on mail servers and gateways, will now be able to send and receive encrypted email through the Postini service. Postini will decrypt, perform filtering or policy-based message management and re-encrypt all TLS encrypted messages sent and received by customers. Postini non-customers also benefit by being assured that they can communicate securely with the thousands of Postini customers without having to negotiate on security solutions or keys.
Based on an analysis of current email traffic over the Postini network, the company expects to immediately begin processing more than 30 million TLS encrypted messages a day, more than any other email security vendor. The volume of encrypted email is expected to increase substantially in 2005, as Postini promotes adoption of the TLS standard across its customer base.
"Support for TLS is another important step in building a global trusted network that assures our customers they are operating with optimal security when they send and receive email across our network, particularly with other Postini customers," said Scott Petry, founder and senior vice president of products and engineering at Postini. "We are making TLS encryption available in order to establish a common standard for secure communications amongst our customer base. Additionally, Postini will continue to enhance the management and oversight capabilities required to provide a consistent and effective encryption solution."
TLS is an encryption standard designed to secure data where it is most vulnerable, in transit over the public Internet. The encryption process, transparent to end-users, permits continued inspection and filtering against spam, viruses and policy violations and preserves management and control for email administrators. "Postini intends to significantly enhance these qualities in upcoming versions of Perimeter Manager by adding new administrative tools to enable centralized enforcement of encryption policies across the enterprise, right down to individual users," said Petry. "For example, our customers will be able to select security levels for email shared between specific users, groups, and organizations, and to set encryption policies regarding email from other companies and domains." Error handling, alternate disposition, and reporting capabilities will extend customers' control over how encryption is managed.
Encryption is becoming increasingly important to corporate users, particularly in industries that regularly exchange confidential information via the Internet, such as health care, legal and financial services. Postini has significant customer coverage across these industries. For example, a recent poll conducted by American Lawyer Media's AmLaw Tech magazine found that 36 percent of the nation's law firms use Postini to secure their email. By providing seamless and managed encryption to these customers, Postini is reinforcing the power of a centralized, managed services model for email security.
Postini's Preemptive Email Protection technology is a managed service that protects enterprise servers and desktops at the perimeter, stopping spam and viruses before they enter the network. The solution handles enterprise email system security and management, offering spam and virus filtering, content and policy management, disaster recovery, industry specific content filtering, and protection from email attacks such as directory harvest attacks (DHAs) and email denial of service (DoS) attacks.
