Samsung Honors Altera With Most Valued Partner of the Year Award

SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Altera Corporation (NASDAQ:ALTR) today announced it has been selected by Samsung Electronics as "Most Valued Partner of the Year" for 2004. The award recognizes Altera for its FPGA technology leadership and the critical role it plays in supporting Samsung's wireless basestation development.

Samsung uses Altera's Nios(R) soft-core processor embedded on a Stratix(R) FPGA in their existing and next-generation wireless basestations. Among other functions, Samsung uses Altera technology to drive serialized backplane interfacing, digital functions on the radio front end, and some of the baseband processing functions.

"Receiving this award from one of the world's top electronics manufacturers demonstrates Altera's commitment to building and maintaining close working partnerships with our customers," said John Daane, Altera's president and CEO. "Altera places a high value on understanding the needs of our customers so that we can build, deliver, and support innovative products that help make companies like Samsung more competitive."

"Altera is a long-time supplier and close partner to Samsung and provides strong support for our wireless basestation business with their high-performance Stratix series of FPGAs," said Ki-Tae Lee, president and CEO of Telecommunication Network Business, Samsung Electronics. "This year, Altera exhibited outstanding supplier support both in terms of providing innovative products and helping Samsung achieve its objectives of high quality, cost-competitive sourcing, and supply stability."

Samsung presents the "Most Valued Partner" award to those suppliers who meet a wide range of performance criteria. Candidates are evaluated on total cost of ownership (TCO), quality metrics; ability to meet scheduled system shipments; and overall technical performance. A major consideration included Altera's ability to work collaboratively with Samsung.
