Nominum's Chief Scientist Recognized for Outstanding Contributions to Information Technology

Paul Mockapetris Named 2004 ACM Fellow for His Role in Developing the Domain Name System (DNS)

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Nominum, today announced that Paul Mockapetris, chief scientist of Nominum Inc, has been named a 2004 ACM fellow. The ACM Council was formed in 1993 to recognize and honour the outstanding contributions by its members in advancing the computing discipline. The annual fellowship appointments recognize outstanding achievements by ACM members for innovation, invention and leadership in the fields of computer science and information technology.

Paul wrote the first DNS implementation while working at the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute. The DNS is crucial for sending emails, accessing websites, and running all IP based applications. DNS is the world's largest distributed database, with over 1 billion public records, accessed by 2 million servers on the internet and several million private networks.

"In addition to its considerable interest to computer scientists, the DNS supports the day-to-day functioning of the internet, allowing the world wide web, peer-to-peer file sharing, and other internet applications to provide service to end users, regardless of time or distance," said Greg Minshall.

"This year's ACM members have advanced the computing discipline and underscored its increasingly critical role in our global, communications-rich society," said John White, CEO of ACM. "Through their outstanding contributions and their exemplary service, these members have provided inspiration, innovation and leadership to the computing and IT community," he said.

"I am very honoured to be recognized by the ACM and accept this fellowship, especially at a time when information technology is impacting on business and individuals as never before," said Paul Mockapetris. "Through the ACM's 57 year history, it has been a major force in advancing the skills of information technology professionals and students worldwide. While computing has come a long way, I believe that today, we are only in the bronze age, and that the technologies of the past will be a stepping stone to a whole new world of innovation and invention."

Paul Mockapetris' accomplishments and commitment to information technology spans years of invention and a long-standing contribution to the internet. He continues to influence the evolution of DNS through his past and present participation in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), as chair of several working groups and the IETF itself from 1994 to 1996. Paul is a featured speaker at numerous industry conferences including, ITU Telecom World 2003, Burton Group Catalyst Conferences and Networld + Interop Show.

The ACM will formally recognize the new Fellows at its annual Awards Banquet to be held in June 2005.
