Each product or service tested filtered more than 10,000 emails and was measured for accuracy of spam filtering technology and rate of false positives. Network World gave an in-depth evaluation to any product with a greater-than-90% catch rate and lower-than-1% false-positive rate, leaving only 12 companies whose products reflected the growing maturity and commoditization of anti-spam products.

Of the top 12 products tested, Postini's Perimeter Manager offered the best balance between spam capture and false positives, with a 97% spam catch rate and only six false positives.
