iPass Enables NEC WelcomeSpot in Japan
Solution Based on iPass Services Combines On-campus and Public Hotspot Roaming
TOKYO, Dec. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- iPass Inc. (NASDAQ:IPAS) announced today that it is working with NEC to deliver an innovative Wi-Fi solution called the NEC WelcomeSpot service. This new service, based on collaboration between the two companies, combines the iPass public Wi-Fi hotspot footprint with the iPass Wireless LAN Roaming service which covers hotspots in private locations such as corporate campuses. The WelcomeSpot service from NEC is now available in Japan.
"Working with our Solutions Partners to bring innovative services to market is another hallmark of the iPass business strategy," says Jon Russo, iPass vice president of marketing. "NEC identified a market opportunity, to include non-public yet important corporate Wi-Fi venues within Japan as part of the overall Wi-Fi service they offer to their customers and to all iPass users in Japan. This unique approach utilizes multiple iPass services in ways that benefit the overall marketplace in Japan. "
The WelcomeSpot service integrates the iPass network of public hotspots, which spans over 40 countries and includes more than 1,000 locations in Japan, with the iPass WLAN Roaming solution which can be deployed in corporate lobbies, reception areas, and conference rooms. WelcomeSpot locations can be used both by employees of the host corporation for LAN access but also by visitors for public Internet connectivity as well.
WelcomeSpot is already available at the NEC Broadband Solutions Center in the Shinagawa East One tower in Tokyo.
All public hotspot networks in the iPass service have been tested and certified by iPass as Enterprise Ready. The rigorous Enterprise Ready testing process ensures service availability, as well as interoperability with policy and security tools, such as virtual private networks, personal firewalls and virus protection. All authentications using the Wireless LAN Roaming service are protected by the GIS standard, a de facto authentication standard developed by iPass to enhance roaming across disparate Wi-Fi networks.
NEC Biglobe has been offering customers iPass services since 1996.
