Intradyn's Email Archiving Appliance for Small SEC-Regulated Firms Adds Audit Capabilities

Intradyn's Email Archiving Appliance for Small SEC-Regulated Firms Adds Audit Capabilities

New ComplianceVault(TM) Feature Lets Small Broker-Dealers and Others Better Manage Their Email and Comply With Strict Regulations

ST. PAUL, Minn., Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Intradyn today announced several additional capabilities to its email archiving appliance designed to help small and midsized businesses (SMBs) affordably comply with email-retention regulations. It is especially targeted at the hundreds of thousands of smaller financial-services firms that must meet the SEC's regulations -- encompassing broker-dealers, investment advisers, money- management firms, hedge funds, and many banks and insurance brokers. The new software enhancements are part of a version 1.2 upgrade to the product.

The ComplianceVault(TM) appliance is an integrated hardware/software solution that captures all of a user company's email on a continuous basis, from an unlimited number of mailboxes -- storing all email messages on both hard disk and unalterable media (Sony(R) AIT WORM tape). The product is an all-in-one, easy-to-use appliance that connects to the network to give smaller firms powerful email search and retrieval capabilities. In particular, financial services firms can now quickly and simply achieve compliance with SEC, NYSE, and NASD regulations for email retention and availability.

The device works with Microsoft(R) Exchange(TM) or with any IMAP or POP3 email server, can be put into use immediately, requires no integration or IT expertise, and can search the content of up to one million emails per second based on keywords. (For more information on the product, see: http://www.intradyn.com/compliancevault )

"The improvements we've added with this upgrade are all based on customer feedback since we introduced the product in June," said Gary Doan, Intradyn's CEO. "The majority of our customers using the ComplianceVault are SEC- regulated firms -- and these firms must meet the most established and stringent email retention and availability regulations out there today. They really don't want to manage email -- they want to manage financial assets."

The Intradyn ComplianceVault appliance incorporates proven data archiving technology from Sony (NYSE:SNE). "By integrating Sony AIT WORM technology into its ComplianceVault email archiving appliances, Intradyn is making a needed and valuable solution available to many firms that are looking to address the additional data retention requirements imposed by governmental agencies, as well as to store and access their email files economically and reliably," said Alan Sund, general manager, tape storage solutions business, Sony Electronics' Component Solutions Business Division. "This combination of hard disk and tape technologies in a single, integrated appliance is relatively unique in the marketplace, allowing the end user to get the best of both disk and tape formats, and offering performance, reliability, and cost effectiveness in a single solution."

Audit System Tracks Users and Access

The primary software enhancement added in the version 1.2 upgrade is an "audit log." This feature helps satisfy certain requirements of the SEC regulations. The auditing system has user access controls and tracks who accesses stored emails, and when. Depending on access level, a given user is now able to search existing email for a specific account or for all accounts, restore messages from the WORM tape media, configure access information, view the access log, or other activities as determined by the administrator. All access activities on the appliance are stored in a database that can be reviewed by the administrator, and this information is searchable by user or date (range of dates).

"Our customers love this audit feature," said Brian McCarthy, president of Maze Information Solutions in Orlando, Florida ( http://www.mazeinfo.com/ ), and an Intradyn reseller. "We know other solutions for email archiving and compliance that have this capability, but they're much more expensive. Smaller organizations do not have significant budgets to spend on email archiving products -- and installation and deployment of those expensive solutions takes a lot more time, too. The ComplianceVault is not only affordable for these customers, they can just plug it in and be archiving all their email in as little as ten minutes."

Peter Gerr, an analyst with Enterprise Strategy Group, states: "Intradyn's ComplianceVault appliance will help broker-dealers capture, store, and retrieve email communications, as well as migrate the information to the appropriate storage media. The new audit features enhance the product's ability to support user's compliance with internal and external regulations. Our research indicates that the first step in any compliance process is designing and implementing reporting features that are easily auditable."

Other Version 1.2 Enhancements

Additional software features that have been incorporated by Intradyn into version 1.2 of its ComplianceVault appliance are as follows:

-- Improved diagnostics reporting. The product can now deliver diagnostic
information to Intradyn either directly through email, or by providing
a .zip file, which may then be forwarded to Intradyn customer support.
This feature removes unnecessary delays and improves the support
process.
-- Enhanced tape drive (or library) status messages. The appliance is
now enhanced to capture detailed hardware result codes from the AIT
tape drive or library whenever an error occurs. It now has the
ability to query SCSI sense data following a failure of any type.
Based on this sense data, more detailed messages can be displayed to
the user, such as no media in drive, media is write-protected, media
is damaged, tape drive is faulty, and others. The sense codes and
associated error messages will also be recorded in the application log
files.
-- Addition of a secure "data wipe" feature. Allows secure removal of
email messages from the device's hard disk, either after a demo or
temporary evaluation, or at end-of-life of a given unit. (No data can
be wiped off the WORM tapes.)
