Gamblers Bet Against Spurrier to Lift Gamecocks
Coaching Change Lights Up Internet Sports Wagering -- Odds are Posted and Lines are Moving Against Spurrier Improving South Carolina's Record
MONTREAL, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Bettors have opened their wallets to bet on the future of University of South Carolina football team following the announcement of Lou Holtz's retirement and Steve Spurrier's seven-year contract to coach the Gamecocks.
At a news conference last Tuesday, November 23, Spurrier vowed to build a team of champions, but gamblers are betting against that happening -- at least for next year.
"We opened the line at over/under 6 1/2 wins in anticipation of our clientele betting the over," explained Mike Foreman, spokesperson for BetUS.com. "Since the Gamecocks won six games this year, we figured that people would at least expect Spurrier to improve that by a game. We were wrong."
There was such an influx of bets on the under 6 1/2 wins, Foreman said they were forced to drop the line to six.
"We expected everyone to be on the Spurrier bandwagon," added Foreman. "It must be one of two things ... either we have a lot of upset Redskins fans betting with us or it's overwhelmingly apparent to them that any coach would have trouble with the tough Southeastern Conference (SEC) schedule they will face next year."
That tough SEC schedule includes games on the road against Georgia, Auburn and Tennessee, and a home match-up against Spurrier's former team, Florida.
Spurrier is a college football coaching legend, winning seven SEC titles and a national championship with the Gators in 1996. Spurrier boasts the best winning percentage in league history, with 122 victories over 12 seasons as coach. Despite his rough patch with the Washington Redskins in 2002 and 2003, many have said that his coaching style is better suited to the college game.
"Spurrier will no doubt bring in some of the top high school talent in the country," said Foreman. "But it might take him a couple of years to build an SEC Championship team."
