Anitian to Release Important Report on Information Security
A New Report From Anitian Enterprise Security Aims to Dispel Common Myths About Hackers, Worms, and Computer Security
PORTLAND, Ore., Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Local security consulting firm Anitian Enterprise Security will release an important document on December 9, 2004 at the Portland ITEC event. This report, titled "Fundamentally Insecure: 10 Myths of Information Security" will take aim at some widely held misconceptions about information security.
The document is the culmination of months of research, analysis, and discussions among information security experts and leaders. The author is Anitian's president and principal consultant Andrew Plato. Mr. Plato will present the findings at the Portland ITEC event.
"Information security is becoming a major concern among business leaders," said Plato. "We understand this because we are a provider of security services and technologies. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of misinformation about how to secure business information systems. This leads to organizations making bad decisions."
For example, one of the most controversial myths articulated in the report is the notion that open source technologies are more secure than closed source or "commercial products." According to Plato, open source is neither more or less secure than anything else.
"Microsoft(R) Windows(R) users and Linux users like to duke it out over which platform is more secure. In fact, neither platform is secure if it is installed, managed, or used in an insecure manner. How systems are used has a more profound impact on security than the actual platform."
Anitian's report also takes aim at security regulations such as the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). According to the report these regulations not as crucial if an organization is already doing a good job managing their business and systems.
Some of the other myths from the report include "Patching is Critical," "Security Should Be Easy" and "Security is a Journey."
The presentation is open to the public. It is part of the Portland ITEC technology trade show. For additional information, visit the ITEC web site at www.goitec.com.
