VANCOUVER, April 7, 2016 /CNW/ - During one fateful weekend, the family of brilliant astrophysicist Albert James, played by Scott Bellis, has a complete meltdown, setting in motion a raucous and hilarious series of events that mirror his radical theories of the behaviour of the universe.

This original, independent movie was written, produced and directed by David Ray and shot entirely on location on the North Shore of Vancouver. It is set to premiere in competitionfor the Tiantan Prize at one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, the Beijing International Film Festival, from April 16-23, 2016. Ray and a large number of the cast will be in attendance.

The film features Vancouver-based actors Kendall Cross (The 100), Maxwell Haynes (The Killing), Scott Bellis (founding member of Bard on the Beach), and Emma Grabinsky (Mr. Hockey). Ray spent over a year casting all the parts and is the first starring role for all of the leads, familiar in supporting roles on much larger Hollywood fare. His supporting cast is filled with local luminaries like Gabrielle Rose (The Sweet Hereafter), Manoj Sood (Little Mosque on the Prairie), Richard Side (Elf), Darla Fay (Juno) and Alan Harmon (If I had Wings).

Ray premiered his previous feature Fetching Cody at the Toronto International Film Festival and helped launch the career of Jay Baruchel in his first starring role. It went on to win Director's Choice at Sedona before being sold to Netflix (USA) and Showtime.

As Vancouver is a service town, most of its booming business in the motion picture industry is "below-the-line": great for technicians, but with little to offer for above-the-line aspirations in key creative roles such as producing, directing, starring, composing or production design. Grand Unified Theory is proudly 100% local, with every key creative position filled by someone living in the lower mainland.

Grand Unified Theory features a cutting edge astrophysicist whose lectures were written in collaboration with Dr. Jaymie Matthews, an award-winning professor of astrophysics at UBC who is an Officer of the Order of Canada.

"After writing half a dozen sci-fi movies for the SyFy Channel that featured families in peril in outlandish scenarios, I decided to write a science fiction movie about my own family in outlandish circumstances. With heroes of mine pitching in, including veteran Shakespearean actor Scott Bellis (founding member of Bard on the Beach) and local Director of Photography John Bartley (Lost, Bates Motel), we created something a little more wild and uninhibited, with none of my normal restrictions; which may have been a bad idea, as I ended up creating all sorts of havoc in my childhood home in North Vancouver BC, reliving trauma and joy from my deeply rooted and well suppressed past." --David Ray, March 23, 2016

Grand Unified Theory was financed by Telefilm Canada.
