Living at the Extremes: Geoscience Research at the Coolest Places on Earth
Congressional Briefing to Cover Importance of Arctic and Antarctica and Geoscience Research in the Regions
WASHINGTON, D.C.--Cold, forbidding and distant, the Arctic and Antarctica are unique environments and often seem too remote to have any impact on the rest of our planet. However, the evidence shows us that they have profound implications for our natural environment, national security and oceans. Researchers working in these remote areas often risk their lives to understand these forces of nature.
The American Geophysical Union (AGU) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), in collaboration with Honorary Special Hosts Senator Harry Reid, Senator Edward Markey and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, will host a Congressional briefing on the importance of these regions. In addition to presentations by renowned researchers, the briefing will also include the perspectives of National Geographic Explorer Jon Bowermaster, director of the new film Antarctica: On the Edge, and Platinum Recording Artist Natalie Merchant, who contributed songs to the film.
