Size doesn't matter - Canadian resilience does
TORONTO, Feb. 6, 2015 /CNW/ - Redbox is the latest U.S. corporate giant that likely hoped Canadian small business owners would be overwhelmed by their size and meekly cede our business to them. Like Movie Gallery (RIP) and the mighty Blockbuster Video (RIP) before them, Redbox was unprepared for the resilience of the locally owned and managed video store. Mom and pop stores created the video rental business in the early 1980s and 30 plus years later, Movie Experts is proud to work with business owners in every province, who continue to rent movies from almost 1,000 retail locations across the country.
Yes, you can still visit a local video store in most markets across Canada, where a knowledgeable movie lover or two will be happy to recommend a movie you'll enjoy which not surprisingly Canadian consumers being the social people we are found preferable to interacting with an impersonal American machine. Moreover, you can rent the newest movies released a few months after they've played in theatres instead of the hit and miss selection of older films available from that other American company, Netflix. As they report, the vast majority of streaming on their service is for old episodes of TV series, so if you want to catch up on Seinfeld or Cheers by all means use Netflix but if you want to rent the newest movies for a reasonable price, visit your locally owned independent video store.
Maybe size does matter if you're measuring the heart of the Canadian small business owner, who much like our women's and men's championship hockey teams and other great athletes, overcome great odds to win again and again against much better financed competition. While we feel for those that have or will lose jobs when U.S. market dominant corporations like Target and Redbox fail, we are a proud group, who will continue to defend our market against the American interlopers as we've done for many decades and look forward to filling the entertainment needs of our customers in a family friendly environment for many years to come.
Too often the media in Canada covers the much heralded arrival of the latest shiny bauble that is a U.S. corporation and then focuses on them again when they fail, so we encourage you to seek out the owner of your local video store to discuss the long odds and competitors they've overcome as you write a success story about a small Canadian business.
