Liberty in Film Award Winners Announced: Film Nonprofit Praises Films for Positive Portrayals of Freedom

NEW YORK, Feb. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today the nonprofit Moving Picture Institute (MPI) announced the winners of its third annual "Liberty in Film Awards," a celebration of films that explore themes of freedom and individual rights.

"Like other entertainment awards, the Liberty in Film Awards recognize great cinematic storytelling," said Rob Pfaltzgraff, president of the Moving Picture Institute, "but these winners also highlight important values in society like ordinary people fighting against oppression."

The Liberty in Film award for "Best Picture" went to The Imitation Game. The film reminds audiences that individuals can achieve extraordinary things, but the "bigger the government, the smaller the individual." The Imitation Game tells the story of Alan Turing, the father of the modern computer. Played by Benedict Cumberbatch, Turing used his extraordinary talent for cryptanalysis to help the British crack the Enigma Code, playing a critical role in ending WWII. But Turing's dedication did not stop the state from persecuting him years later for his sexual orientation, eventually leading to his suicide.

Chef -- a heartwarming film about a man who loses his restaurant job and decides to reclaim his life, reunite his family, and start his own small food truck business -- won the "Fan Favorite" award for the "Best Celebration of the Entrepreneurial Spirit."

The Giver - Best Male Character, "Best Fight for Self-Determination"

Divergent - Best Female Character, "Best Stand Against Thought Control"

The LEGO Movie -- Best Animated, "Best Portrayal of Central Planning vs. Spontaneous Order"

Selma - Spirit of Ideas, "Best Portrayal of the Fight for Equal Rights"

Leviathan - Best Foreign, "Best Portrayal of the Abuse of Power"

and several honorable mentions.
