Film Nonprofit Praises, Roasts Oscar Picks for Their Portrayals of Freedom

NEW YORK, Jan. 16, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Coinciding with the Academy Award nominations, the Moving Picture Institute seeks nominations for its second annual "Liberty in Film Awards." These awards recognize films that celebrate freedom and give "dishonorable mention" to movies that undermine ideals of liberty.

"The Liberty in Film Awards are an excellent opportunity to praise mainstream films that celebrate entrepreneurship and self-determination," said Adam Guillette, Director of Outreach for the Moving Picture Institute. "It's also a great opportunity to point out when Hollywood uses its influence to misrepresent freedom and free enterprise," he added.

In 2013, the Moving Picture Institute honored "The Dark Knight Rises," in which Bruce Wayne realizes that corporations can donate to charity only when economic freedom lets them make profits. It also recognized "Won't Back Down," an uplifting story of a single mother who takes on a powerful teachers' union so that her daughter can attend a better school.

Nominations for the best pro-liberty movies of 2013 can be emailed to liberty@thempi.org. The Moving Picture Institute will also give dishonorable mention to films that have done a disservice to liberty.

The Moving Picture Institute doesn't just give awards -- it wins them, too. In 2012, its film "Battle for Brooklyn" was short-listed for an Academy Award nomination in the Best Documentary category. In 2012, two MPI filmmakers broke a Guinness World Record for the largest film screening of all time.
