NMPA Takes Action In Major Anti-Piracy Effort Against Unlicensed Lyric Sites

NMPA Takes Action In Major Anti-Piracy Effort Against Unlicensed Lyric Sites

WASHINGTON - Lyrics--the words to songs--are pirated constantly by those who seek to illegally profit. Every day, there are over five million searches for "lyrics" on Google alone, and over 50 percent of all lyric page views worldwide are on unlicensed lyric sites. Such sites do not pay songwriters, but profit from advertisement-generated revenue. Unlicensed lyric sites have a devastating effect on songwriters whose lyrics are the only product offered by these unlicensed sites. Songwriter and researcher David Lowery has worked to identify the top infringing lyrics sites, and NMPA is giving them notice: license or shutdown.
