FCC Certifies Adaptrum TV White Space Solution with Google TV White Space Database

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 14, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Adaptrum, Inc., a leading provider of TV white space technology, today announced that FCC has certified its ACRS 1.0 TV white space solution with the Google TV white space database. Adaptrum's ACRS 1.0 is the first radio solution certified with Google's database - an important milestone in a growing ecosystem of TV white space devices and databases and accelerated worldwide adoption of TV white space technology.

TV white spaces are unused TV channels between the active broadcast TV channels. In the US, the TV white spaces were opened up for unlicensed broadband access through the FCC's television band device rulemaking, completed in 2010. TV white space is one of the most important wireless technology innovations in recent history and is being embraced by spectrum regulators around the world, from UK to Singapore to South Africa. The significance of TV white space goes beyond opening up the TV spectrum. Database-enabled dynamic spectrum sharing creates a new model of efficient spectrum management that could expand far beyond the traditional spectrum licensing and allocation models.

Adaptrum's ACRS 1.0 TV white space radio solution was among the first TV white space devices certified by the FCC. ACRS 1.0 offers unmatched range, throughput performance, and channel utilization efficiency while meeting the out-of-band emission requirement for the FCC television band devices. Adaptrum has worked with Google's spectrum database team to implement the required TV band device-and-database interface and went through rigorous FCC testing leading to the certification of ACRS 1.0 with Google's database. Adaptrum ACRS 1.0 radio solution is also certified with the Telcordia (now Iconectiv) TV white space database.

The first deployment using the FCC certified Adaptrum ACRS 1.0 devices with the FCC certified Google TV white space database is live on the campus of West Virginia University (WVU), providing public WiFi service. The WVU deployment is a pilot project under the AIR.U initiative founded by New America Foundation, Declaration Networks Group, LLC, the Gig.U, Google and Microsoft to demonstrate the real-world potential of TV white space technology to deliver broadband coverage and capacity to rural areas. The WVU white space network is managed by the AIR.U co-founder Declarations Networks Group, LLC and is being expanded to additional applications and areas of the WVU campus.
