FringeNYC Showcases Musical That Brings Father's Long-Lost Music To Life

HOBOKEN, N.J., June 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Eight years after his passing, a father's daughter is making his musical dreams come true. Using music and lyrics from David DeNoon's recently unearthed songbook, Christine DeNoon, in partnership with Lorie Steele, has written the show her father always wanted, at last fulfilling one of his lifelong goals. Someone To Belong To has been accepted into The New York International Fringe Festival, one of the largest multi-arts events in North America running from August 9-25(th) at venues in lower Manhattan.

Set in a 1960s ad agency in New York City, Someone To Belong To is part Cole Porter, part Mad Men, and uses many of DeNoon's more autobiographical songs about life in New York, working in advertising, and finding - and losing - love.

Known in life for his advertising acumen (he worked at Young & Rubicam where he wrote award-winning campaigns, including one of his most famous: the "Excedrin Headache" of the '60s), David DeNoon had musical aspirations from the time he was a teenager. While at the University of Miami he collaborated with the likes of Jerry Herman (Hello Dolly!, La Cage aux Folles) and Robert Maxwell (Shangri-La, Ebb Tide). In 1962, before JFK's assassination, he wrote "My Daddy is President," sung from the perspective of a young Caroline Kennedy; it reached #67 on the Billboard Top 100 in July of that year. He married twice, had six children, lived and worked abroad and won a total of 8 Clio awards. Yet his dream of producing a musical on a New York City stage remained a distant hope - until now.

"I always thought of my dad as an advertising man who wrote a few of his own songs here and there," says Christine. "Finding and finally getting a chance to listen to so much of his music has taught me so much more about him and the person he was, both the good and the bad. In a sense, these songs have made my father truly come alive to me. I'm incredibly excited to share them in a medium he loved."
