CBC Documentary 'This is what Democracy Sounds Like' elects Canadian Screen Award Nominee for original music score

CBC Documentary 'This is what Democracy Sounds Like' elects Canadian Screen Award Nominee for original music score

LOS ANGELES, June 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ - The upcoming CBC documentary "This is
what Democracy Sounds Like" will feature an original musical score from
film-music composer Darren Fung. Fung is now scoring music for the
documentary, which is currently in post-production and scheduled to
broadcast July 6 on the CBC.

From director Tom Radford, the narrative follows the origins of labor in
public service and analyzes union striking, government privatization of
fundamental services and how government is now working with the public.
The story begins in Alberta, Canada and advances to examine the recall
election of Wisconsin Republican Gov. Scott Walker.

"When I started the score, I thought it'd be more orchestral," Fung
said. "It's kind of hybrid, combining electronica with my classical
background. In electronica, there's a lot of dark stuff that's
happening because we're showing how workers' rights are being violated.
There's people losing work and losing their jobs. It's a really
important story that needs to be told."

Radford said, "We've engaged Darren to provide the documentary a
powerful score that matches the themes of our story. He's consistently
delivered outstanding film music over his career. I know his work will
resonate and highlight the story's tone."

The documentary score comes on the heels of Fung's composing for the
feature documentary "Lost Years: A People's Struggle for Justice," for
which earlier this year he received a Canadian Screen Award nomination
in the category of Best Original Music. The film tells the story of 150
years of the Chinese diaspora in Canada, the U.S., New Zealand and
Australia.

"Lost Years"was broadcast nationally on CBC as a special two-part miniseries event
and was a finalist at the Park City Film Music Festival. Fung's "Lost
Years"score featured the China National Symphony Orchestra. The soundtrack was
released by Fung's Stinky Rice Studios and is available on iTunes,
Amazon and Spotify.

Fung's known for composing for the films "Just Buried," "Whirligig" and
"Beyond Sherwood Forest" and the independent features "Awaken," "Father
vs. Son" and "Summerhood."

Fung, the Second Vice President of the Screen Composers Guild of Canada,
is credited for the recreation of Canada's second national anthem, and
the beloved hockey theme for CTV and TSN. He was the composer for Bell
Canada's Orchestra spot, voted as Canada's top commercial of 2010, by
The Globe and Mail newspaper.
