FBR Media Nominated for Two 2012 Emmy® Awards

Heartfelt documentary about a 10-year-old rescue dog with brain cancer nominated for two prestigious Emmy® Awards

WASHINGTON, Sept. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- FBR Media announced today its television show "Dakota's Brain" is nominated for two 2012 Emmy® Awards in the documentary category of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' Upper Midwest Chapter competition. "Dakota's Brain" is a 28-minute television show that chronicles the story of 10-year-old Dakota, a rescue dog from Montrose, MN, who is diagnosed with a deadly brain cancer. Executive producers Paul McKellips and Frankie Trull, producer/director Liz Hodge and director of photography/editor Steve Dorst are nominated for the prestigious Emmy® Awards.

"FBR Media is extremely honored to receive two Emmy® nominations for our documentary on deadly brain cancers that affect both people and dogs," said FBR Media president Paul McKellips. "These nominations honor the researchers, in both human and animal medicine, who have dedicated their lives to developing new treatments for deadly brain cancers, such as glioblastoma."

In "Dakota's Brain," Dr. John Ohlfest (University of Minnesota's Masonic Cancer Center) and Dr. Elizabeth Pluhar (University of Minnesota's College of Veterinary Medicine) formed a scientist-veterinary team and set out on a mission to cure the deadliest forms of brain cancer that are killing friends, family members and companion pets, like Dakota. In this inspiring documentary, viewers are taken deep inside University of Minnesota labs where Ohlfest and Pluhar have discovered, what could be, a viable cure for certain brain cancers. Their revolutionary brain tumor vaccine is keeping dogs with brain cancer alive and they hope it can do the same for people. The vaccine works by training the immune system to recognize brain cancer and kill it. Dogs, like Dakota, that have received the treatment are living happy and active lives for years to come, instead of dying painful deaths in a matter of months.

"Dakota's Brain" was filmed at the University of Minnesota's Masonic Cancer Center and College of Veterinary Medicine. The program aired on April 8, 2012, on WCCO. The Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences will announce the winners at the Emmy® Awards gala on September 29, 2012, in Minneapolis. "Dakota's Brain" is the third episode in FBR Media's biomedical television series Bench to Bedside.
