Peace + Love + Folkiness: The Thirty-Fifth Takoma Park Folk Festival, Sept 9th

TAKOMA PARK, Md., Aug. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Straight from the heart of the hippie haven, Takoma Park, it's time to bring the FOLK out for a day of community, music and fun. The all-day FREE festival is in its 35(th) year of showcasing the best in DC-area music, dance and crafts.

When: Sunday, September 9, 2012, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Where: Takoma Park Middle School, 7611 Piney Branch Rd, Takoma Park, MD 29012.

Our Mission
People of all ages join together for a day to celebrate the diverse music and dance cultures of the Greater DC Metro Area. More than 50 performances will reflect traditions new and old from around the world -- with plenty of past favorite performers and exciting newcomers. Visitors can not only watch performances, but they can learn folk dances and sing along with interactive performances.

The Takoma Park Folk Festival also showcases handcrafted, original works by artisans, and we welcome more than 100 local community organizations to share information about their activities.

Woody Guthrie is the subject of a 75-minute tribute hosted by Joe Uehlein. Other performances will reflect the legacy of this great progressive songwriter and activist born 100 years ago, and best known for "This Land is Your Land." The DC Labor Chorus will kick off the festival, leading a sing-along procession through the site at 10:30.


Our History
Since its inception in 1978, the Takoma Park Folk Festival has been a community affair, organized by volunteers.

Sam Abbott, founder of the Takoma Park Folk Festival, artist, activist, organizer and Mayor (1980-1986) showed us that one person can make a huge difference. That first year, 1978, a one-stage festival was held at Takoma Park Junior High School, and it raised about $1,100 to help keep the Takoma Theatre out of the hands of a developer. Since that time, the Festival has grown in size and stature, but it's remained true to its roots as a celebration by and for Takoma Park citizens: The Festival for the Folk of Takoma Park.
