FRIDAY, AUGUST 5: LUCILLE BALL'S 100TH

Profile America -- Friday, August 5th. Tomorrow marks the 100th birthday of one of television's most revered performers -- Lucille Ball. After striving for success on stage and in "B" movies, Ball got in on the ground floor of television in the early 1950s and for the better part of the next three decades, she was one of the top performers in the new medium. She became the first woman to head a production company and created many innovative techniques. She also is largely credited with shifting the center of television production from New York to Hollywood. When the show "I Love Lucy" started in 1951, there were just over 10 million homes with television sets. Today, television is almost universal in the nation's 117 million households. Profile America is in its 15th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
