This is the third year for the Bay Area's Cox Conserves Heroes program. Last year, Bruce Beyaert was selected for his volunteer work on the San Francisco Bay Trail, which received $5,000 as his nonprofit of choice. Lennie Roberts was the Bay Area's first Cox Conserves Hero in 2009 in recognition of her 50 tireless years of environmental volunteer work. As Roberts' nonprofit of choice, the Committee for Green Foothills received $5,000.

The Cox Conserves Heroes program was created through a partnership between TPL and Cox Enterprises, the parent company of KTVU Channel 2, to honor everyday conservationists. Since the program launched in 2008, nearly $125,000 has been collectively donated to more than 40 local environmental nonprofits and 13 individuals have been recognized as Cox Conserves Heroes. Cox Conserves Heroes also runs in Atlanta; Hampton Roads, Va.; San Diego and Seattle.
