FRIDAY, JUNE 3: "DRAGNET" DEBUTS
Profile America -- Friday, June 3rd. One of the most distinctive themes in the history of broadcasting was first heard on this date in 1949 -- "Dragnet," the show was conceived, directed, and starred Jack Webb as police Sergeant Joe Friday. Each week's program was based on actual cases from the files of the Los Angeles Police Department. As the announcer said: "The story you are about to hear is true. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent." The famous theme was composed by Walter Schumann. When "Dragnet" was first aired, nine-out-of-10 U.S. households had a radio. Now, radio is nearly universal and households in the U.S. have an average of eight radios. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
