Moore Will Mean Less Suffering for Puppy Mill Dogs; Demi Moore Tweets about Puppy Mills; Bob Harper, Jillian Michaels, Carol Leifer Retweet - LA Billboard a Success!
LOS ANGELES, June 20, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- It started with a billboard in Los Angeles asking Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher to tweet their millions of followers and encourage them to adopt dogs from shelters rather buy dogs bred in puppy mills - factory farms where hundreds of breeding dogs are kept in deplorable conditions, their puppies sold in pet stores or over the Internet. Sponsored by author Jana Kohl and PA based Main Line Animal Rescue, the campaign soon attracted the attention of comedian and long-time animal advocate Carol Leifer, who used her contacts in the entertainment industry to reach out to the Kutchers. On June 2, Demi Moore tweeted her almost four million followers, included the web site www.dogsinacage.com, and declared the dogs need our help! The tweet was met with elation throughout the animal welfare community and Miss Moore was praised for her commitment to the humane treatment of breeding dogs in factory farms.

After reading Demi Moore's tweet, Kelly Colbert, producer of Madonna of the Mills (a documentary focusing on animal rescue and puppy mills airing on HBO this summer) contacted The Biggest Loser's Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels of The Doctors and they soon retweeted Demi Moore's tweet to their almost half a million fans. Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper have long been strong and tireless champions of shelter dogs and cats and have done much to educate their fans on a variety of issues concerning the welfare of animals.
Main Line Animal Rescue successfully used a billboard to attract Oprah Winfrey's attention three years ago. When asked, a representative of the Pennsylvania shelter said they were thrilled and grateful beyond words to Demi Moore for helping spread the word about the factory farming of dogs in this country. "It's not surprising Demi Moore would agree to help the millions of breeding dogs who are abused and exploited in this country every year - considering all her work on behalf of abused and exploited children through the Demi and Ashton Foundation (www.demiandashton.org)," said Bill Smith of MLAR. "Demi Moore gives a voice to the voiceless and uses her celebrity to make the world a better place." Jana Kohl and volunteers of MLAR urge families to adopt a pet from their local shelter rather than support the inhumane treatment of dogs in puppy mills by buying their puppies over the Internet or from pet stores.
