KTVU Channel 2 Seeks Nominations for Third Annual Cox Conserves Heroes Award
Program to donate $10,000 to local environmental nonprofits
SAN FRANCISCO, June 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- KTVU Channel 2, in partnership with The Trust for Public Land (TPL), today launched San Francisco Bay Area's 2011 Cox Conserves Heroes, a national awards program to honor and celebrate conservation in everyday life. By showcasing unsung heroes, KTVU Channel 2 and TPL hope to inspire more people to take an active role in neighborhood conservation, while also providing financial support to local environmental nonprofits.

The Cox Conserves Heroes program asks local residents to nominate people in their community who volunteer their time to help create, preserve or enhance outdoor places for everyone to enjoy.
Nominations are accepted through June 30, 2011. To nominate an individual, visit www.ktvu.com and select the KTVU tab on the right for "Cox Conserves Heroes."
Following the nomination stage, the Cox Conserves Judging Circle, a group of local environmental and civic leaders, will select five finalists. The winning Hero, chosen by online public vote, will be awarded $5,000 to donate to the environmental nonprofit of his or her choice. The four finalists each will receive $1,250 to donate to their nonprofit of choice.

-- August 15 - September 12: Cast Your Vote - Videos of the finalists are
posted and the public votes.
-- Early October: Winner Announcement - The Bay Area's 2011 Cox Conserves
Hero is announced.
This is the third year for the Bay Area's Cox Conserves Heroes program. Lennie Roberts was the Bay Area's first Cox Conserves Hero in 2009 in recognition of her 50 tireless years of environmental volunteer work. As Roberts' nonprofit of choice, the Committee for Green Foothills received $5,000. Last year, Bruce Beyaert was selected for his volunteer work on the San Francisco Bay Trail, which received $5,000 as his nonprofit of choice.
The Cox Conserves Heroes program was created through a partnership between The Trust for Public Land and Cox Enterprises, the parent company of KTVU Channel 2, to honor everyday conservationists. Since the program launched in 2008, nearly $125,000 has been donated to local environmental nonprofits. Cox Conserves Heroes also runs in Atlanta; Hampton Roads, Va.; San Diego and Seattle.
