Hive Lighting Re-Invents Film & TV Lighting With Plasma Technology

Hive delivers more energy-efficient movie lights, without sacrificing output or quality.

LOS ANGELES, June 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Hive Lighting is proud to bring Plasma light technology to the world of media production, making lights energy-efficient without compromises. Different than HMIs, Tungstens and LEDs, Plasma emitters produce full-spectrum, daylight-balanced light. They are flicker-free, completely silent, and generate little heat, providing a comfortable and quiet set for cast and crew. If that weren't enough, each light can save up to $3,000 a year.

These unique lights were the brainchild of Director of Photography, Jon Edward Miller and Energy Consultant Robert Rutherford. As co-creator Miller puts it, "These beautiful, daylight balanced lights are high output, have great color quality, and are ready for the rigors of studio and location shoots. As a Director of Photography I started building these lights for my own use, and quickly realized that their amazing color and power were something I needed to share with the industry."

Studios and rental houses are already jumping on to the waiting list, eager to save money and energy with these new efficient lights, without losing the intensity of traditional lighting (something that's been sorely missed in recent eco-conscious years). Hive's Hornet180 Fresnel, the first in their product line, is less expensive than a traditional HMI and twice as energy efficient. Hive's lamps last 10,000 hours, over 30 times longer than HMI and Tungsten lamps. They are twice as efficient as HMIs and 4 to 8 times as efficient as Tungsten equivalents. Using a 180 watt lamp and pulling just 275 total system watts, a Hive Hornet180 Fresnel puts out more light than 400-watt HMIs (460 system watts) and 1,000-watt Tungsten Fresnels.

Hive's Hornet has already been used on several commercials, including shoots for Sprint and Pepsi, and the response from cinematographers has been overwhelmingly positive. Hive's lights are compatible with all standard lighting accessories. No new scrims, barn doors, or fresnel lenses are needed. And, true to their revolutionary nature, Hive's lights are also smart. They will be controllable through DMX, laptops, and a wireless iPhone app.

Hive is currently retrofitting 1K and 2K Tungsten Fresnel Heads with Plasma, while crews anxiously await the Fall 2011 release of the Hornet180 Fresnel, BumbleBee540 SpaceLight and HoneyBee180 Softlight. And production professionals have a lot to look forward to after that. Hive will be rolling out a full product line to suit all filming needs. Fresnels, Pars, Spacelights, Softlights, Open Faces - You want it, Hive is putting Plasma in it. And it's only going to get brighter...
