The USA and Canada Take on the World in Trivia Competition
The USA and Canada Take on the World in Trivia Competition
Warm-up challenge prior to the Trivia Championships of North America
LAS VEGAS, May 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- On Saturday, June 4th, 2011, game show contestants, trivia players, and other know-it-alls will gather at locations in the USA and Canada to test their wits against others across the globe during the World Quizzing Championships. The two-hour written test taken by individuals will cover popular and academic trivia in the areas of culture, entertainment, history, lifestyle, media, sport, and science -- along with geography, technology and other diverse topics. Each competitor faces the same questions (translated into their mother tongue in many cases) on the same day in more than 25 countries worldwide.
What sort of questions will the competitors face, or more to the point, what won't be asked? This is the antithesis of a pub trivia night; it is instead a global quiz for a global audience. Don't expect questions about TV soap operas, local politics or other regional events. Do expect questions about mythology, the Olympic Games, Disney films, the Solar System, wildlife, and Nobel Laureates; in short, expect questions for which people from Dallas, Dusseldorf, Dakar, Delhi, or Darwin all might possibly know the answers. This is the 8th year for the WQC, and sample questions, the history of the quiz and other information can be found at http://www.wqc2011.com along with links for anyone interested to RSVP in order to participate.
Locations include the Canadian cities of Halifax NS, Ottawa ON, Toronto ON, and Windsor ON, and USA sites in Ann Arbor MI, Athens GA, Austin TX, Boston MA, Boulder CO, Chicago IL, Little Rock AR, Los Angeles CA, New York NY, Philadelphia PA, Pittsburgh PA, Phoenix AZ, Portland OR, St. Cloud MN, San Diego CA, San Francisco CA, and Seattle WA -- with others being added in the weeks leading up to the quiz to be listed at http://sites.google.com/site/iqausa/. Many participants will be using the WQC as a warm-up for the Trivia Championships of North America to be held the following month.
The Trivia Championships of North America -- the first event of its kind -- will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 8-10, 2011 at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino. There will be competition for both individuals and teams, with a preliminary schedule, FAQ, and a link for application to participate found at http://www.tcona.com. TCONA also includes an official Jeopardy!(TM) test and panel discussion about the recent human and computer competition on the program.
