SATURDAY, JANUARY 22: A NEW KIND OF COMEDY SHOW

Profile America -- Saturday, January 22nd. Television viewers were introduced to a new kind of comedy show on this date in 1968 -- "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" -- brought to you from "beautiful downtown Burbank." The show was made up of a rapid-fire series of gags and sketches featuring unknowns who soon became household names -- Goldie Hawn, Jo Anne Worley, Arte Johnson, Ruth Buzzi, and Lily Tomlin. Laugh-in brought a new energy to comedy as well as adding new phrases to America's vocabulary, such as "you bet your sweet bippy" and "sock it to me." The show was broadcast for more than five years, ending in 1973. In 1968, there were nearly 57 million homes in the U.S. with television sets, about 28 percent of total households. Profile America is in its 14th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
