Concern Worldwide launches annual Empty Plate Campaign
NEW YORK, Nov. 1, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Every night, one in six people in the world go to bed hungry -- that adds up to close to a billion people. Each day, 16,000 children die of hunger-related causes.
On Nov. 3, Concern Worldwide, the international humanitarian organization, is sponsoring the U.S. premiere of "One in Six," a documentary about a major success in the battle against global hunger.
Co-produced by Concern and Irish public broadcaster RTE, the film tells the story of Community-based Therapeutic Care (CTC), which helped revolutionize the treatment of severe malnutrition in developing countries by administering care locally -- in the home, in the village, rather than in distant hospitals -- whenever possible.
Relying on Ready-to-Use-Therapeutic Food, which requires no refrigeration or mixing with milk or water, CTC was pioneered by NGO Valid International and jointly developed by Concern Worldwide. Endorsed by the UN, CTC -- now known as Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition or CMAM -- has become one of the standard interventions for nutrition emergencies and is now implemented in over 15 countries by Concern Worldwide.
The screening will mark the official launch of Concern's annual Empty Plate Campaign, which encourages individuals to give up a meal during the holiday season and donate its cost to Concern's anti-hunger programs: www.concernusa.org/emptyplate.
Prior to the screening, Concern Worldwide U.S. Operations Director Dominic MacSorley will discuss Concern's large-scale expansion of CTC programs and the organization's overall strategy in fighting against global hunger. Steve Dolinsky, Food Reporter for ABC 7 Chicago, is a special guest.
