'Good Government Begins With Free and Fair Elections,' Says Independent Candidate for Nevada's 3rd Congressional District
LAS VEGAS, Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- On October 20th, Jon Ralston's "Face to Face" show, carried on KVBC-Channel 3 in Las Vegas, will host Nevada's 3rd Congressional District debate with only two out of the five qualified candidates present: Dina Titus, the Democratic incumbent, and Joe Heck, the Republican. The show refuses to allow the remaining candidates to participate by hiding behind an FCC exemption.
The FCC equal-time rule provides an exemption for reporting the news. Ralston's show does not report the news, but is in fact a "show," constantly looking for higher ratings. Nevada voters, like all voters, are entitled to hear from all qualified candidates, regardless of party affiliation, and choose for themselves who they want to vote for in November.
"For 'Face to Face' to allow only two of the five candidates is not only deceptive, but influences the outcome of the election. If candidates Dina Titus and Joe Heck choose to participate in this deception, shame on them and the democratic principles they stand for," says Barry Michaels, the independent candidate for Nevada's 3rd Congressional District.
On October 7th, Michaels for Congress filed a complaint with the FCC against the Face to Face show for deceptive and biased broadcast practice. In addition, Mr. Michaels, who is one of the three candidates shut out of the debate, plans on asking his 5,000 Facebook friends and supporters to do the same. Mr. Michaels believes that FCC Section 73.1941 needs to be amended with respect to candidate debates hosted by radio and television stations.
