Somalia / Militants Arrest Radio Director

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) condemns in its strongest terms by the arrest of Radio Director in Beled Hawo town of Gedo region in southwestern Somalia by the Al-Shabaab militants on Saturday, 9 October 2010.
Hassan Mohamud Halane, who is director of Radio Mandeeq in the town, was arrested on Saturday, 9 October 2010, after he returned from a workshop in Hargeisa, Somaliland conducted by an international aid organization. It is the second day he remains in Al-Shabaab jail. Al-Shabaab accused the director of attending the workshop in Hargeisa. So far, they did not bring him before a court.
Al Shabaab arrested Mohamed Qani Hussein Kuusow, who is stringer for Radio Shabelle and Radio Markabley, in the same town on 26 September 2010. Kuusow was arrested after he filed a report to Radio Shabelle based in Mogadishu and Radio Markabley in Bardhere town about reported military movements of the government forces based in Doolow town. The journalist still remains in jail.
